Trigger Point Therapy
A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot and is a palpable nodule in the muscle. Patients often experience jump sign, local tenderness, local twitch response and referred pain due to compression and muscle contraction caused by the nodules. It is also called myofascial pain syndrome ( MPS). Trigger points may also lead to chronic pain, stiffness and tension of muscles, physical limitation and loss of normal function.
There are many factors that cause the formation of trigger points, such as-
-
Muscle injury
-
Muscle overuse
-
Repetitive strain
-
Sedentary lifestyle
-
Poor posture
-
Chronic street-condition anxiety, depression, psychological trauma
-
Sleep disturbance
-
Vitamin deficiencies such as vitamin C, D, B, iron and folic acid
Trigger point therapy is a deep pressure massage technique and usually focuses more on specific areas. It may cause some soreness during or right after the massage but this is part of the natural healing process. However, it is important to be open with your massage therapist about the level of pressure and discomfort you are willing endure.
Please note:
Trigger Point Therapy is a massage technique that normally combines with other massage techniques.
